So – the doctor says you can go home – you’re better!
You have passed through a difficult period of your life. A time of worry and uncertainty. Perhaps it’s lasted a long time. You were slowly getting worse. Or perhaps your illness came on suddenly. One day you were OK, the next you seemed near to death’s door.
But now it’s all past. You’ve been in hospital. You’ve had the treatment, perhaps the operation. And now life looks bright again.
You can go home. Back to your house. Back to your family. Back to your fields. Back to your cattle. Back to your friends. You must be happy!
In the Bible there is a story of ten men who were sick. They had leprosy. Their life was miserable. They had terrible sores. They were shut out of their homes. They couldn’t come into the village. Then one day they saw Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God. He came to earth from heaven and lived here among men. The lepers saw Jesus passing by. They called out to him to help them. He told them to go to see the priests. On the way they suddenly realised that he had healed them. All ten were made completely better. Then what happened? Nine went home full of joy. They forgot about Jesus. Only one remembered that it was Jesus who had healed them. Only one came back to thank Jesus.
If you are going home better today it isn’t because the medicines in this hospital are more powerful than elsewhere, nor because the doctors are cleverer. It is because God has been kind to you. He is powerful and he is loving and it is he who has made you well. As you go home, will you be like the nine lepers who were happy but forgot to thank Jesus. Or will you remember to give thanks to God for what he has done for you? God in heaven is the one who created everything. He is perfectly good. He is very wise and he is very powerful. You should thank him because it is he who has made you better.
But there is something even more important than giving us health that we need God to do for us. You have a disease much worse than even the worst diseases we treat in our hospital. You, like the whole human race, are affected by sin. Sin is a terrible thing that has corrupted every human being that lives in this world. Sin is rebellion against God. We have not obeyed God. We have not followed God. We have not sought to please God. This is sin. It is the root of all the bad things we do and of our failure to do the good things we should do. It’s not an illness we catch by chance or by bad luck. We are all sinners because we have chosen to be sinners. And we cannot get rid of this sin ourselves. It is deep inside us and we cannot get it out. We need someone to save us. Jesus, the Son of God is the one who can save us. This is the Good News that we talk about in the Good News hospital. Did you listen to those who spoke about Jesus while you were in the hospital?
They said that there are four important things you need to know.
1. You need to be saved.
The Bible says “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” and “All we like sheep have gone astray, we have all turned to our own way”
2. You cannot save yourself
The Bible says “No-one will be justified by observing the law”
3. God has prepared salvation for you
The Bible says “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life” and “Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God”.
4. The Lord Jesus is the only one who can save and keep you
The Bible says “If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come”.
So – you came to the hospital and got better – now you need to come to Jesus to be saved. But in order to come to Jesus you need to abandon your old sinful ways. You need to repent. You need to leave behind your life of sin. You must abandon worshipping the spirits. You must abandon drink and adultery, lying and selfishness. You need to turn your back on pride and revenge. You need to put all your trust in Jesus. No-one else can save you. But he can save you completely. The one leper who came back to thank Jesus found that out. He went home not only better, but saved.
What about you? If we can help you any more to understand the Good News about Jesus please ask us. Read the Bible. Come to church and hear the Good News explained.
Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.
