“Arise, LORD! Lift up Your hand, O God… You, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; You consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.” Psalm 10v12-15
Voting time again in the UK, we hear! A perennial political hot potato is the welfare state. Having lived for decades with an established welfare system in place, I think it’s fair to say most British people take it for granted. We shouldn’t! The majority of people in our world can but dream of a welfare system like the British one. And it is to a great extent founded on Judeo-Christian ethics, a legacy from former generations of politicians and leaders motivated by the character of the God they worshipped. There is a rich seam that runs through the Bible, verses like this one from Psalm 10, revealing the Living God as a Creator who is concerned for the welfare of the most vulnerable and needy. Repeatedly we are told that His eyes are upon the orphans, the widows, the poor and the foreigner; we are told of His compassion which is stirred by the plight of the downtrodden; and there is a recurring call for His chosen people to mirror this concern and compassion and care…
