This tract is written for someone who is ill, very ill.
You are that person today. You are ill, very ill.
Perhaps you feel afraid – of what will happen, of the operation you may need, of suffering, of dying
Perhaps you feel lonely – many people are around you, but they cannot really understand how you feel inside
Perhaps you feel worried – about the future – who will provide for your families, your children, if you cannot work, or if you die?
Perhaps the question that is on your mind is this: is your illness serious – really serious. That is to say: will you die?
The doctors and nurses are busy examining you and treating you – with medicines, injections, drips.
Your family is busy caring for your needs – bringing food, washing you and so on. But who can help you with your worries, your fears and your loneliness?
Most important of all, who can prepare you for death?
We have written this tract because we want to tell you of someone who can help you. He can help you with all your deepest needs, fears and worries. Above all he can help with the thing that no-one else in the world can help you with – to prepare for your death.
A heavy cloud hangs over you today – but this tract is written to bring you good news and hope for the future and for eternity.
Will you die? That is a serious question. The answer is that we do not know for certain – but there is a possibility, or even a probability. Only God knows.
Will you live only a short time? None of us know how long we will live. Doctors may have an idea. But they are not always right. Only God knows.
But it is very important that we all prepare for death. Even people who are well will die some day. Even strong people, even young people will die. But in your case, the need to prepare for death is even more important, even more urgent.
When we die, we will meet God. There is only one God. He made the world. He made you. He is perfectly good, and he made you to be perfectly good. But you are not perfectly good – none of us is perfectly good. The Bible, God’s book, says that we are sinners. We have all chosen to go our own way, and not God’s way. So when we meet God, what will happen? The Bible tells us that we will be cast into outer darkness, into hell, forever. That will be terrible. It will be worse than we can imagine. That is why we should fear death.
However there is still hope. God takes no pleasure in sending people to hell. Indeed He has made a way whereby we can instead go to heaven, where He is, where there is perfect joy and peace forever. It is the way of forgiveness. Our sins must be forgiven. God sent His Son Jesus into the world for that very purpose. Jesus lived a perfect life, but suffered a cruel death when wicked men nailed him to a cross of wood. This was no accident. God had planned it. For on the cross Jesus was bearing the punishment of our sins. In order for us to receive forgiveness for our sins, we need to be sorry for them, turn away from them and trust in Jesus who has paid the penalty of our sins. That is the most important thing that you need to do. You need to do it now, before it is too late, before you die.
In Jesus you can find forgiveness, peace with God and eternal life. This is the Good News that we want you to know.
If you will trust in Jesus now, He will become your Shepherd, that is to say He will take care of you.
Here are some words written in the Bible by one who had come to know the love and care of this good shepherd:
The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need
He lets me rest in fields of green grass
and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water.
He gives me new strength
He guides me in the right paths, as He has promised.
Even if I go through the deepest darkness,
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will not be afraid, Lord, for you are with me.
Your shepherd’s rod and staff protect me.
I know that your goodness and love
will be with me all my life;
And your house will be my home
For ever. Psalm 23
If you trust in Jesus, He will take away your fear and your loneliness. He will help you like no-one else can help you. Best of all He will prepare you to meet God when you die, for He has already paid to bring you forgiveness, new life and eternal hope.
He passed through death Himself – then He rose again to live for ever more. Put you trust in Him!
