Chink chink chink

In certain areas in and near the hospital compound, “chink chink chink” is the constant soundtrack of life. It is the sound of the stone cutters at work - some working at the large boulders of granite that make up the landscape here to make 20cm square blocks - others breaking the chippings up into gravel. It’s hard, hard work, but for us at the hospital, it’s as essential as anything any of us do. Without the granite blocks and gravel piles, we could never construct the maternity building. Almost all the materials are locally sourced by hand. All the sand needed for the new maternity building is hand dug from the local countryside. The red clay bricks are all hand cut in the fields around the hospital before being fired in hand built kilns.
